The Biosphere Trail – hiking in a fantastic natural and cultural landscape

Biosphere Trail runs along Lake Vänern’s south east shore between Mariestad and Läckö Castle. It has beautiful and varied countryside where you can experience historical places, quaint town centres, cafés, restaurants and extensive views over the glittering Lake Vänern archipelago.



The Biosphere Trail is a 138 km nature trail with great opportunities to create a hike based on your specific wishes. Perhaps start with our suggested stages. Whether you choose to do shorter day trips or walk longer stretches, there are many interesting things to see and lots to explore here. Designation as one of the world’s biosphere areas by UNESCO means that the area focuses on sustainable development. This is done through local collaboration, far-sighted social development and preservation of the biological diversity.

Götene och Lidköpings area

Kinnekulle

Nature, Culture, History and Activities

Those who visit Kinnekulle once always want to return. Because there are many experiences throughout the year here. Back when Carl von Linné visited the 306 m high plateau mountain in the 1700s, he praised it and called Kinnekulle “a place among the most remarkable in the kingdom.”

The pearl of Lake Vänern with fishing harbour, Läckö Castle, hiking trails and water adventures. Immediately outside Lidköping lies Kållandsö island. The island, which is the second largest in Lake Vänern is a real pearl with many places of interest of diverse character.

Läckö Castle

Läckö Castle lies on Kållandsö island. The castle is located on a headland in the Eken Archipelago in Lake Vänern and is a memorial to Sweden’s era of power. In the middle ages it belonged to the bishops of Skara and was left to the De la Gardie family in 1615, however it was claimed by the crown in 1681.

Motorstadion - Go-cart

Go-cart in Lidköping

The Motorsport Arena in Lidköping has Go-carting, folk racing, drifting, mini-racing, tractor-pulling, motocross and enduro.

However, rental is only available on the Go-cart track. The Go-cart track maintains a very high international standard and is classed as one of the premier tracks in the world. It is 1250m long and 8-10m wide, which makes it Sweden’s longest track.

Rörstrand - museum and shop

For 294 years, Rörstrand’s porcelain factory was a leader in beauty and functionality in ceramics.

The factory with the R stamp made everything from magnificent ceramics to pots and popular classics. Thousands of workers and a staff of artists put Rörstrand in the position of crown jewel of ceramics, with production of earthenware, art nouveau, beautiful everyday items, Swedish Grace, pop ceramics, grumpy tableware and objects d’art.

Vänermuset

The Lake Vänern Museum has its origins in the Lidköping Museum of handicrafts, Hantverksmuseum, which was opened in 1918 in the town hall on the square, Nya Stadens Torg, on the initiative of Lidköping’s industry and handwork associations.

In 1965 the museum became municipal and moved to Orionhuset on the square.

In 1980 it moved once again into the building of an old girls’ school on Mellbygatan and is today located in Framnäs by the Lake Vänern shore. Read more here
